Stories to Song
Mama Kin & Tilly Kay
A session with Mama Kin and Tilly Kay that will lead the group through the process of extracting a thread from a story and flowering it into a song. This workshop will involve some writing, sharing and singing, exploring the alchemy of distilling a sentiment, or an experience into song form, to be able to sing it out, sing it through, set it free, or tuck it in.
Above all, Mama Kin is a storyteller, a mystical conjurer who taps the human condition with equal parts ferocity and vulnerability. An award-winning singer-songwriter, Mama Kin’s musical adventures have taken many paths, from We Two Thieves - a collaboration with folk icon Emily Lubitz (Tinpan Orange) - to her soul-searing duo Mama Kin Spender alongside electro wizard Dingo Spender which spawned ARIA-nominated debut ‘Golden Magnetic’. As a solo artist Mama Kin released two albums – ‘Beat and Holler’ and AIR and ARIA-nominated ‘The Magician’s Daughter’ - firmly establishing herself as a raconteur traversing folk and soul with depth and sincerity.
Unafraid to mine the intricacies of our darkest emotions, Mama Kin connects with her fans intimately. Gut-wrenchingly honest and powerful, her lyrics venture beyond the veil as she opens her heart, building instant and lifelong networks. Her music has taken her across the globe from Canada to Ireland, France and the USA where she has shared stages with the likes of The Cat Empire, John Butler Trio and The Waifs.
Mama Kin (aka Danielle Caruana) is the co-founder of The Seed, a philanthropic foundation supporting artists. She is a workshop facilitator and speaker, revelling in community connection and storytelling.
Tilly Kay cut her musical teeth working in high pressure live formats, continually finding and making opportunities to hone her skill set to lift and shift. Versatility- coupled with a clear ability to read the room- would best describe Tilly's facilitation style.
